Millcraft Investments has announced that it has reached an agreement to build an artificial lagoon on the north side, west of the West End Bridge.

The two-acre lagoon will feature incredible blue water and will be the first of its kind in a cold climate.

In summer, the lagoon part will include a white sand beach for lounging and sunbathing. It would also have places for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and diving lessons.

The idyllic two-acre public access lagoon will anchor the Esplanade and use a patented high-tech process that uses 100 times less chemicals and 50 times less energy than a traditional swimming pool.

“We are thrilled to open our first ever lagoon to the world which will bring beach life during the summer months and transform into a skating rink during the winter months, right in the heart of Pittsburgh,” said Christopher Souza, Director Crystal Regional. Lagoons.

Also in the summer, the lagoon will feature a splash pool for children and a fountain and light show at night.

The Esplanade will also feature another first for Pittsburgh, hot spring baths that will be available year-round.

Surrounding the lagoon will be a hotel, residences and other retail businesses.

The project is described as a small version of Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon.

Crystal Lagoons already has 23 agreements for man-made crystal lagoons in place across the country, plus over 60 more that are currently in active negotiations. To date around the world, 600 artificial lagoon projects have been completed, started or planned by Crystal Lagoons.

A giant Ferris wheel with LED lighting and air-conditioned gondolas is also planned.

The group says it also envisions a “Pittsburgh Firsts” museum that would showcase Pittsburgh inventions and inventors.
