Sunday Mushroom Hike at McLean Nature Preserve

Join Daniel Kempin, a local mushroom lover, in search of fall mushrooms at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, at McLean Nature Reserve in Bay County. These fungi come in many varieties, colors and shapes and grow on the forest floor as well as on logs and trees. They can be delicious or deadly, so careful identification is crucial if you are using them as a side dish.

You will not be collecting mushrooms for the table but will have the opportunity to photograph and learn basic identification techniques. Fall mushrooms can be fickle, as humidity and temperature strongly affect their fruiting time. Our leisurely walk on the trails through the woods will be an unpredictable adventure. White asters bloom in abundance and will be a plus.

This event is co-sponsored by Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy and is free and open to the public. McLean Nature Reserve is located at 2199 N. Flajole Road, Rhodes (approximately ¼ mile north of Erickson Road) in northwest Bay County.

For directions or more information, call Jim or Shirley McLean at 989-631-3067 in Midland. On program day, they can be reached at 989-698-6239.
